How to Make Money in Second Life

How to Make Money in Second Life

Second Life is unique in the world of MMORPG, offering the ability to live out a virtual life that is similar to, or far surpasses, your real life. Players have the ability to apply for jobs, start businesses, hire and fire employees, and even open bank accounts to save the money they make. Second Life also offers the option of converting game currency into real-world money that can be deposited into your real-world bank account.

There are as many ways to make money in Second Life as there in the real world. The following are only a few of the options available to players:
  • Land – Land is, by far, one of the best and most popular ways to make money in Second Life. Just like people in the real world, avatars need places to live and work, so they need land to build homes and businesses. Anshe Chung made history by making her first $1 million in U.S. currency as a Second Life land baron, spending her time buying and selling, renting and developing. Just keep in mind that you do have to pay a fee based on the amount of land you own, so you need to be quick if you are only buying to resell and do not want to pay the fees.
  • Scripting – Scripting is a good way to make some serious money in Second Life. Scripters act as builders in the game world, creating everything from doors that open to television sets that actually work. Any player who does not have time to build something will search for it in the game world so they can just buy it. Some Second Life businesses look for scripters to work for them. Other scripters create various items or packages and offer them up for sale to other players.
  • Retail – As in the real world, the avatars in Second Life have wants and needs, making the retail industry a great way to make money. Players can set up shops and booths of any kind to sell their products. Some players create their own items to sell, while others purchase complete business kits or products for their inventory from people who create them. You can make money with anything from clothes to accessories, tattoos to home furnishings.
  • Fashion – The fashionistas in Second Life take fashion very seriously, so designing and selling clothing and accessories is an excellent way to make money. There are numerous websites and blogs dedicated to the current fashion trends in Second Life, and anyone interested in the fashion industry needs to check out all of them. Designs will not make you money unless they are selling.

There are so many possibilities for making money in Second Life that it would be difficult to list them all. The game even has an active adult entertainment industry, including strippers and escorts. Of course, players also have the option of simply buying game currency from currency merchants. When all else fails, players can always check the job listings for the Second Life world.
